Motor Director Frequently Asked Questions
How is Motor Director different from a vibration-only monitoring system?
Most vibration-only systems detect mechanical symptoms after a problem has already developed. Motor Director provides a more complete view of motor health by monitoring both electrical and mechanical operating conditions, including voltage, current, current imbalance, power, power factor, frequency, temperature, vibration, and RPM.
By combining electrical and mechanical data, Motor Director can help identify developing issues before they turn into mechanical damage, production downtime, or unexpected motor failure.
Why should I monitor electrical parameters if I already have vibration monitoring?
Many motor failures begin as electrical problems long before vibration levels increase. Voltage imbalance, current imbalance, phase loss, overload, underload, power quality issues, and rotor defects can all contribute to motor stress before visible mechanical symptoms appear.
Monitoring electrical and mechanical conditions together gives maintenance teams earlier warning, better diagnostics, and a more complete understanding of motor health than vibration monitoring alone.
Can Motor Director help reduce unplanned downtime?
Yes. Motor Director continuously logs motor operating conditions and alerts maintenance personnel when those conditions move outside established limits. This allows maintenance teams to investigate problems, plan corrective action, and schedule repairs before a failure causes production downtime.
Will Motor Director replace my existing motor protection relay?
Not necessarily. Motor Director can be installed alongside existing motor protection devices or integrated into a new protection strategy. Many facilities continue using existing overloads, phase monitors, or VFD protection functions while adding Motor Director for monitoring, diagnostics, trending, and predictive maintenance.
What data can Motor Director trend over time?
Motor Director can trend key motor health and operating data, including voltage, current, current imbalance, voltage imbalance, frequency, power factor, real power, reactive power, energy consumption, temperature, vibration, and other operating conditions.
These historical trends help maintenance and reliability teams identify gradual deterioration that may not be visible during routine inspections.
How much data storage is included with Motor Director?
Motor Director stores operating data locally and securely transmits information to the SENSERT platform for long-term historical analysis and reporting. The system provides access to 3 months of motor operating data.
Does Motor Director work on pumps, fans, blowers, compressors, and other motor-driven equipment?
Yes. Motor Director is suitable for a wide range of critical motor applications, including water and wastewater pumps, air compressors, exhaust fans, HVAC equipment, conveyors, mixers, process equipment, mining equipment, and other industrial motor-driven assets.
What happens if cellular or WiFi communication is lost?
Motor Director continues monitoring and logging data locally if communication is temporarily lost. When communication is restored, data synchronization resumes automatically. Motor protection and monitoring functions remain operational even when cellular or WiFi communication is unavailable.
Is Motor Director compatible with VFD-driven motors?
Yes. Motor Director can be configured for applications using variable frequency drives. Depending on measured total harmonic distortion and application requirements, additional power quality equipment such as passive line reactors or active line reactors may be recommended.
Consult ATC Diversified Electronics for VFD-specific applications, power quality considerations, and communication requirements.
How quickly can Motor Director be installed?
Most Motor Director installations can be completed in a few hours. The system is delivered as a preassembled UL508A-rated panel, which helps reduce field wiring and installation time compared to custom-built monitoring systems.
Motor Director is designed to wire into an existing MCC while helping preserve existing panel listings where applicable.
How does the SENSERT platform benefit maintenance personnel?
The SENSERT platform gives maintenance teams mobile access to motor health data, alarm notifications, historical trend analysis, reporting tools, and centralized monitoring for multiple assets. This helps personnel monitor equipment health without needing to be physically present at the motor location.
What is the typical return on investment for Motor Director?
ROI varies by application, but for many facilities, preventing a single unplanned outage can justify the investment. Motor Director can help create value through reduced downtime, reduced troubleshooting time, improved maintenance planning, extended motor life, and fewer emergency repairs.
Does Motor Director use artificial intelligence?
Motor Director is designed to support machine-learning-based analysis through the SENSERT platform using the customer’s choice of external AI engine. These capabilities can help identify abnormal operating patterns and support preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
Embedded AI for onboard analytics is currently in development.
Can Motor Director integrate with our existing SCADA system?
Yes. Motor Director supports integration with SCADA, HMI, PLC, CMMS, and other industrial software platforms through an API via Ethernet TCP/IP. This allows motor health and operational data collected by Motor Director to be incorporated into existing plant monitoring, reporting, and maintenance systems.
What information can Motor Director share with SCADA?
Motor Director can share electrical measurements, mechanical condition indicators, alarm status, fault status, motor run status, energy consumption, historical trend data, and other operating statistics through its API.
What are the benefits of SCADA integration?
By integrating Motor Director data into an existing SCADA system, facilities can display motor health information on operator screens, generate plant-wide alarms, correlate motor health with process conditions, create custom dashboards and reports, improve troubleshooting efficiency, and centralize asset visibility across the facility.
Do I still need the SENSERT platform if I have SCADA?
That depends on your goals. SCADA systems are typically focused on process monitoring and control, while the SENSERT platform is designed specifically for maintenance and reliability teams.
Many customers use both systems together: SCADA for operations and SENSERT for motor health, historical asset analytics, mobile access, predictive maintenance tools, asset-specific reporting, and multi-site visibility.
Is custom programming required for SCADA integration?
Because Motor Director uses an API-based integration approach, some software configuration or development may be required depending on the SCADA platform being used. ATC Diversified Electronics can assist customers in determining the best integration method for their application.
Can multiple Motor Director systems be integrated into one SCADA system?
Yes. Multiple Motor Director systems can provide data to a centralized SCADA platform, allowing facilities to monitor critical motor assets across an entire plant or multiple locations from a single interface.
