What is motor and pump protection?
Motor and pump protection uses monitoring and control devices to identify damaging electrical, thermal, mechanical, and pump-specific conditions. Depending on the application, the system may issue an alarm, interrupt the control circuit, record trend data, or support a planned maintenance response.
What is the difference between motor protection and condition monitoring?
Motor protection responds to defined fault conditions that could damage equipment. Condition monitoring tracks operating data over time to identify developing changes before a fault threshold is reached. Critical assets often benefit from using both approaches together.
Why use both phase monitoring and current monitoring?
Phase monitors evaluate the incoming power supply for conditions such as phase loss, phase reversal, voltage imbalance, overvoltage, and undervoltage. Current monitors evaluate the load being drawn by the equipment. Using both provides visibility into supply-side problems and load-related changes.
How do seal failure monitors protect submersible pumps?
Seal failure monitors detect moisture ingress through compatible resistive float switches or conductive probes. This provides an early warning that allows maintenance teams to inspect the pump before moisture causes more extensive motor damage. Selected SPM models can also monitor motor temperature.
Can a motor automatically restart after a power interruption?
The MAR Series can automatically restart a motor after a qualifying momentary power drop. However, automatic restart is not appropriate for every machine or process. The control design, connected equipment, personnel exposure, process state, and applicable electrical and safety requirements must all be considered.
Does Motor Director™ work with motors controlled by VFDs?
Motor Director™ is currently designed for motors that are not using VFDs. Contact ATC Diversified Electronics to discuss the application before specifying Motor Director™ for a VFD-controlled motor.
